Iron Cupcake: Music – PATRON TEQUILA: Margarita Cupcakes

October 19, 2009

IRON CUPCAKE IS BACK, CELEBRATE! The theme is music, and I have chosen…
Paradiso Girls -Patron Tequila
…I am kind of ashamed I went with this song, but as soon as I saw it when I was scrolling through my iPod I had an immediate idea. I don’t hide it very well that I LOVE PATRON. I mean they sponsor one of my favorite racing teams and every person involved is so cool…plus they just won the championship in American Le Mans last weekend, so this is a very celebratory cupcake for me, as is listening to my “Patron Tequila” song.
I wouldn’t have listened to this song if it wasn’t for the fact that there are some decent remixes of it (see link above: my favorite is the This/Is Remix, or the Steel remix)…It’s a totally trashy party song, and I’m not afraid to say I love to listen to it loudly in my car as I drive around.
But what better than a cupcake being on Patron Tequila, it’s drunk on margarita? I promise you that this cupcake will not at the end of the night have you drunk and throwing up, unless you are baking along with it’s other inspiration: the Patron Pomegranate Margarita.
I wanted to do Pomegranate Margarita Cupcakes but for some reason they just didn’t want to work. I tried twice. I decided to just leave the pomegranate juice out and use orange liqueur instead for a more traditional margarita and it finally worked out.

Margarita Cupcakes inspired by the song “Patron Tequila”
Makes about 10 cupcakes
1 cup flour
2 tsp baking powder
¼ tsp salt
1 stick butter, room temperature
¾ cup sugar
1 egg
1 tsp vanilla
¼ cup + 2 tbsp milk
2 tbsp tequila (you don’t have to use Patron I promise)
1 tbsp orange liqueur (I used Patron Citronge, other options include Triple Sec, Grand Marnier, Contreau..)
zest of one lime + juice of half of it

1. Preheat oven to 325F. Prepare a pan or silicone molds to your liking.
2. Combine flour, baking powder, lime zest, and salt in a bowl.
3. Cream together butter and sugar in another bowl until fluffy. Add egg and vanilla and mix until combined. Add half the dry ingredients and wet ingredients (milk, lime juice, tequila, and orange liqueur) into this bowl and combine after each addition. Add zest and the other half of the dry ingredients and mix again.
4. Pour into cupcake pan.
5. Bake in oven for 16-18 minutes or until toothpick inserted in a center cake comes out clean.

Margarita Buttercream
1 stick butter
2 cups powdered sugar
1 tbsp milk
1 tsp tequila
1 tsp lime juice
1 tsp orange liqueur
Cream butter until fluffy. Add half the powdered sugar along with the milk, mix until combined. Add the rest of the powdered sugar, the tequila, lime juice, and orange liqueur, and beat until fluffy. Add more sugar or milk if needed for the right consistency.
Frost cupcakes.
